Close to 10,000 residents and students descended on the sprawling Republic Polytechnic campus along Woodlands Avenue 9 on a sunny 5th November morning. The occasion? The launch of the 17th Clean and Green Week, officiated by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

It was a bright and colourful event, befitting the fine weather after the recent haze spell. Smiling happy faces thronged the venue and youthful exuberance were in abundance in keeping with the theme of "Youth for the Environment" - from in-line skaters, hip hop dancers, and percussion drummers that welcomed our Prime Minister; to youth volunteers that manned the exhibits, conducted Green Tours, organised a Green Bazaar and Can-Art competitions; to participating in a Youth Forum on Climate Change, and putting up various stage shows like Superstar Concert, Magic Show and Dance Mania - everywhere one turned, one couldn't help bumping into a fresh face glowing with excitement at the event.

Besides the fun, performances, freebies and games, attendees were also exhorted to "Stay Cool! Go Green!" through simple everyday actions that contribute towards mitigating the impact of climate change. In line with the focus on this key issue, Mayor Teo of North West Community Development Council (co-organiser of the launch event this year) announced new energy conservation initiatives for the North West District next year to help raise awareness amongst students and residents. This was further reinforced through the Climate Change Awareness Programme exhibits helmed by the Everyday.
